Trips to post office deductible? Sometimes deductible? Partially deductible?

Situation 1:

   I leave my house,
drive to my (business-only) post office box,    get my mail
   I return home
I'm pretty sure situation 1 is fully deductible.

Situation 2:
  I leave my house
I drive to the Hardware store
I stop at the post office box on the way home   I return home
I would guess situation 2 is not so clear

Is the rule:
The trip to the post office must be "pure"; you can't stop anywhere along the way
or
It depends on whether the post office is on the way. For example, if the Hardware store is North of Home and the Post Office is South of home.

Bottom Line: Waht is the RULE about deducting trips to the Post Office? Does the trip have to be "pure" (home, p.o., home) or are there "conditions" or partial deductions, etc.
